General Gold
Fossicking Information
Gold has been and continues to be found in many areas of
New Zealand including the Coromandel Peninsula, Marlborough, The West Coast,
Otago, and South Canterbury.
The Department of Conservation has even established specific areas for the public to pan for gold. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/activity-finder/gold-fossicking/
Amateurs who take the gold fossicking hobby a bit more seriously not only pan, but employ crevice suckers, sluice boxes, and even small dredges. While these techniques can find very fine alluvial gold that metal detectors cannot, metal detectors certainly have their place and are often used in association with other equipment.
When used on their own detectors have the advantage of light weight, very little physical labour, rapid scouting of large areas, and they do not require a water source.
A quality gold detector like the Gold Bug can of
course be used to locate any metal including coins,
jewellery, and relics.
